Position Purpose:
The Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) fulfills a unique role in the support and recovery from mental illness and substance use disorders and has been trained to work with others on their road to recovery. This training incorporates the PRSS’s recovery experience to inspire hope in those they serve and provide a positive role model to others. A PRSS collaborates with the people we serve and clinical staff in the best interest of an individual’s recovery process. There are many positive roles that a PRSS can fulfill in an organization based on their skills, experience, education, and desires. A PRSS offers the advantage of lived experience from severe mental illness and substance abuse. They know the journey to recovery is real and attainable because they have traveled the path.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Peer Support Specialist will use their experiences to develop meaningful and trusting client relationships, acting as a mentor. The Peer Support Specialist provides PEER’s an example of what they can strive for in their recovery.
  • The Peer Support Specialist works to build a supportive community of both patients and staff that is conducive to PEER’s growth and recovery. They assist in the creation and implementation of social activities and help create a positive environment for everyone. 
  • Attend training related to culturally appropriate crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and follow-up best practices within Tribal communities.
  • Prove crisis support response to Tribal Citizens and liaison with local crisis centers, including hospital discharge planning and follow-up.
  • Peer Support Specialist links with various community organizations and resources to provide additional support for patients, particularly as they transition back to recovery in the general community. This can include continued healthcare, housing, job assistance, jails, additional treatment services, and support in returning to society.
  • To support the facility, the Peer Support Specialist handles the logistics of PEERs of transportation, manages follow-up appointments, and works with crisis center facility administrators and discharge staff members.
  • Provide general health and behavioral health education.
  • Responsible for liaising between clients, families, the community, and health care providers to ensure clients and families understand conditions and treatment.
  • Assist with community health promotion and disease prevention events in presenting health education to individuals and the community.
  • Responsibilities may include assessing patients’ safety, developing public awareness activities, and coordinating training and cultural events.
  • Submit monthly report to supervisor and other duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • Must receive and maintain PRSS certification by completing required continued education hours and attending additional training relevant to the position within six months from the hire date. 
  • Have lived experience and two years of documented recovery. 
  • Ability to drive Tribal vehicles.
  • Valid driver's license
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Active IC&RC or NAADAC Certification is Ideal!
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certified. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to work in individual and group settings, self-motivation skills, work effectively under pressure, ability to adapt to change, work effectively under pressure, ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external departments and the ability to interact professionally with the public and tribal citizens.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with individuals from a variety of r professional, educational, and diverse backgrounds. 
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs.; must be able to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods to perform the assigned job duties correctly.
  • Knowledge of mental health and crisis support preferred.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance is preferred.
  • Must collaborate with tribes, tribal organizations, and crisis response centers. 
Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurance.

Work Requirements:
Position involves prolonged sitting, standing, stooping, or bending, lifting, or carrying up to 50 pounds on a daily basis. Work is generally performed in an office environment with varying levels of lighting, air quality, noise, and / or temperature.
